2020 Season Update

Dear JLL Families,

Good afternoon, and I hope you are enjoying the warmer temperatures and what appears to be an end to winter.  That feels weird to say and ponder, but we do live in Iowa and have all seen snow in mid-April.

You may have heard today that Little League International has officially canceled their World Series events for all age groups and their Regional Championships, in essence canceling its All-Stars season.   Even though our league does not operate for that sole purpose, participating in those events does drive many of our scheduling decisions.   With the closure of All-Stars, our league now has more flexibility to do what we need to do in effort to return to the field this season.

As a board, we have prepared for this and are still planning on resuming a season in late June/early July for 5-6 weeks.   We would play at our complex during the week, much like we would have, with participation ultimately driving the final decision.  I have been communicating with other leagues should we need to work something out in the form of interleague play, which might be a fun change of pace.

We are aware some families will not be able to participate for a variety of reasons.  Any family wishing for a refund will be eligible for a 75% refund which we will be able to process soon.  The 25% that is being withheld is due to costs that we cannot recoup.  Many of JLL’s expenditures occur in January/February to ensure we start on time and have enough helmets, bats, balls and replace various equipment items.  There are also fixed material cost that are associated with maintaining our complex and its nine fields.

On Monday, May 4th you will receive an email with further instructions on how you would like to proceed.  You will have three choices to make:
1. Please move my child to the season that is scheduled to start in late June.  Nothing further will be required of you.
2. My child will not be able to participate, but please accept my registration fee as a donation.
3. My child will not be able to participate and please refund me back 75% of my registration fee.

We respectfully ask that you complete this task in one (1) weeks’ time ending on May 11th.  If during the process you do not respond, we will take that to mean we are moving your child to the season scheduled to start in June/July.  This might seem confusing today, but we will provide clear next steps on Monday.

I realize there is a lot of information here, but I hope this helps provide clarity to our plans so each family can make the best individual decision.  Please let me know if you have additional questions, and thank you for your time.

Respectfully,
Chris Andrews
President – Johnston Little League
